 5. Summaries, 15 April - 28 April 2013

Week 8-9

Each class summarizes the answers received from other Learning Circle partners and post them to the wiki site.

Summary hc1, Angus Morrison Elementary School, Canada,

First and foremost, thank you to all the groups for their well developed answers.  Our questions revolved around our curiosity around the role of media involved in perpetuating and informing the world about violence and conflict.  It was interesting to read the responses.  Most of the groups responded in a very similar way.  The majority of the groups agreed that the media played a vital role in delivering the fast action speed of violence around the world.  One group suggested that it was instaneous and constant feed of information and that this could affect the way future generations respond or feel about violence in the World.  We asked who was responsible for this information, and many said that it was in fact the responsibility of the media to inform but to do so in a responsible way.  One group suggested that the government should be more involved in what information is released and the extent to which info is shared.  We thought this was interesting because we felt that might be part of the problem of censorship and how innaccurate information is shared.

Summary hc3, Lorentz Lyceum, Netherlands

Our school had a question about body language.

We’ve chose this question because we are a multicultural class and a thing in 1 persons culture could mean a different thing in the other country or culture. So that could cause a lots of conflicts and problems in the world.

Different schools had answered this question with different answers. As example in our country it’s normal that when you’re on a birthday and you give 3 kisses on the cheek and maybe a hug. We look each other in the eyes when we talk and give a handshake. But if you look in Ukraine it’s normal to hug, kiss cheeks, firm a handshake so you can compare most of the things with the signs in the Netherlands. In Romania they say that the most of the conflict start because of verbal communications gone wrong. Because of all the different signs we have in the world there’s a lot of miscommunication.

So maybe it’s better if we had all the same signs and signals, maybe we can appear a lot of problems and fights in the world.

Summary hc4, Tabor Scholengemeenschap / locatie Werenfridus, Netherlands

Most answers were positive about globalisation saying it brings people closer on a religious, political and social level. It can however also give conflicts when people are trying to get more than other people. The positive view is based on the idea that people are respectful and nice to each other. Also the idea is that it will give knowledge to one and another.

On the other hand people fear losing their culture, language and religion which is contradictory to the positive view.

Most answers looked at the EU as being a region in the world and therefore part of globalisation. We had wanted to know which influence the region that you live in has on the fear of globalisation.

We think it is a good thing that young people are positive about globalisation of the world.

Thank you for all your answers,

love from class H3X

Summary hc5, Wolfert Lyceum, Netherlands

Our question was:

What do you see as the major problems in your country, at the moment or in the near future?

Are there a lot of different opinions in your country about these problems and how to solve them, and how does your country deal with these different opinions?

Working hard:

picasion.com
create gifs at picasion.com easily

gif
how to make a gif online

We have combined the answers from the different schools by the country they are from and then we have looked at similarities and differences in the answer to make a general summary.

Canada;

Problems:

1 pollution,

2 loss of jobs,

3 suicide/depression

4 politicians

Different opinions about solutions and dealing with opinions:

Combined: a divison between people that experience these problems themselves and those that don’t. There is a tendency to ignore negative opinions.

Netherlands

Problems:

1. economic crisis,

2. leading to banks failing, decreasing house prices, lower pensions, loss of jobs

3. loss of jobs that are taken by foreigners and refugees coming into the country

Different opinions about solutions and dealing with opinions:

Increasing participating in the European Union and helping other countries or banks financially and helping workers or refugees from other countries stands opposite closing borders and operating more as a country by itself again.

A lot of efforts are aimed at making agreements that satisfy everyone, the so-called ‘poldermodel’.

Romania

Problems:

1. economical crisis

2. leading to very low standards of living

3. catching up with joining the EEG

Different opinions about solutions and dealing with opinions:

Being nice and performing good business. Or changing the government. A structural plan is needed for the economy to make the transitions that are required

As everything is connected all those that are involved are important in finding the solution.

Ukraine

Problems:

1. pollution

Different opinions about solutions and dealing with opinions:

Fining people that pollute and people refusing to pay these fines is leading to conflicts.

General

When looking for similarities and differences in the answers we see the following.

Similarities

Problems

1. Economical crisis

2. Pollution

Different opinions about solutions and dealing with opinions:

There are always seem to be opposing groups that see opposing solutions to the problems

Differences

The effect of the economical crisis seems to depend on the income of the people living in it. In a rich country it influences the house prices and in a poor country how much people have to eat.

The desire to want to find a solution that satisfies everybody involved seems to differ in the different countries.

We want to take all the teachers and children that have answered our question and have learned a lot from discussing the answer we received.

Summary hc6, Pedagogicla Liceum, Ukraine

Analyzing the answers we found that GTP participants from different countries mentioned different problems.

Students from Canada think that environmental problems such as, oil spills, pollution, melting ice caps and the forest industry (lack of trees) can affect human beings in future.

Students from the Netherlands described alcohol and drug problem. In the Netherlands before 2013 the minimum age to purchase and drink alcohol was 16 years. This causes problems in society, because the number of children in a coma or the children with drink problem is increased in the last few years.

Another group from the Netherlands refers to economy issues. All tax payers who have to pay in 10 years or later, have to pay more tax, because the population that get a pension is greatly increasing, and the amount of people that have to pay for them. The taxpayers over 10 years is slowly decreasing. That will affect people a lot.

Students from Romania think that economic problems which exist nowadays can affect people in future. Economical crisis affect the other fields of society, with an impact on education and the health system which are the most sensitive areas.

Our conclusion:

Governments and people  from different countries have to work together in solving economic, environmental, health and other problems to predict future problems in the society.

Summary hc7, Lorentz Lyceum, Netherlands

Countries can often have conflicts with neighbouring countries.

The recourses in countries are most of the time the cause of conflicts.

Like in Canada they have the freshest water supply in the world which might cause the U.S to bully with Canada. Canada can’t really do much with political issues against the U.S because the U.S is the bigger country.

Even though Canada fears that the U.S and Canada relationship will be abused in the near future Canada thinks optimistically and tries to keep a good relationship.

The Netherlands have had some conflicts with the closets neighbouring countries Belgium and Germany. These countries haven’t had many conflicts except during World War 1 and 2.

Ever since the World War 2 ended the Netherlands hasn’t had any conflicts with these countries. because of theinfluence of other people with other culture and religion who came to work and live the past 50 years .

These countries all had their own currency until 2002 when they all switched over to the euros and where they all became part of the European Monetary Union

There can also be economic reasons for conflicts if a country has more money than any other countries in that area, they might get jealous.

Jealousy can turn into a war.

What is also a big problem is that most countries don’t respect each other which causes no cooperation. Romania says they do have respect from and to each other and this means Romania get a lot of help from surrounding countries.

Summary hc8, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania, teacher Popa Mariana

Hi!

We noticed that we put a very interesting question, because the differences between people's mind are huge.

Some people say that many people fight for the different religions they have. Many of them don't agree that the other ones don't have the same religion like they do. Students from Hc3 say it is possible that the religious conflicts between people can become a war. It isn't nice at all, but it happens. Many problems about religions are usually outside Europe, where Catholics and Protestants fight between each other.

Guys from Hc5 mention that the religion is a very important thing of the daily life. They also say that every religion has its rules, like the followings: Muslims can't eat pork and Buddhism can't eat cow, because it is not allowed by their religion.

We think that the people who say we're all different and we have different ways of thinking and habits, they're fully right, because you'll never find two similar people.

Some people hate each other's religions and, as we said before, this can turn into a war.

Hc9 think that the religions shouldn't cause conflicts and be a problem. All people should be respected and not be condamned for religious aspects.

Some people are influenced by movies or music messages and make discriminations or condemn people.

The students from Hc9 tell us that there are many countries in the world, even today, where groups of people are persecuted because of their religion and many people are ready to kill others for the difference between religions.

Hc10 say that many people want the others to have the same religious views as they have.

In conclusion, there are many opinions about the difference between religions and ethnic aspects. Those were just some of them, because everybody thinks differently. We're all different.

All the best,

HC 8

Summary hc9, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania, teacher SANDU DOINA, ILIE CATALINA

        Hi !

In this cycle of learning our theme was Humanity and Conflict Resolution.

Our question on this topic was:Conflicts have been present in human history from very long ago up to the present. However, they have changed in time, that is, we think their causes are different. What do you think caused more conflicts in the past and what is causing them nowadays? What can we do besides respecting human rights in order to avoid conflicts today?”

After all the answers we know that for Angus Morrison Elementary School, Canada the main reason causing conflicts in the past and present is religion. They think that to avoid conflicts today, besides respecting human rights, we could enforce a law to ensure that religion isn’t a good excuse or the way to solve or change our problems.

Wolfert Lyceum, Netherlands thinks that in history many conflicts were caused by people who wanted to have leverage and wealth. Now it’s different, because in their country, everybody can have his or her own religion. But sometimes arguments can arise between immigrants and the Dutch people.

Pedagogical Liceum, Ukraine is convinced that religion is the cause of conflicts in the world in the past and in the present. They think that the religion has a double role: the cause of conflicts and an important tool for conflict resolution.

Lorentz Lyceum, Netherlands thinks that for avoiding conflict we can choose to fight (when the issue and the relationship is not important), we can choose to avoid conflicts (when the issue isn’t important and the relationship is important) and we can also work together (when the issue and the relation is very important).

Colegiul Economic Buzau, Romania thinks that in the 19th century, the people living in the countryside usually had problems with their land.  Nowadays, the conflicts aren’t for land and things like that but for money, houses and especially jewellery. They consider that in order to prevent this type of conflict, the international community must take specific intervention methods, e.g. policies, programs, procedures, diplomatic initiatives, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian action.

Sutton Public School, Canada thinks that in the past conflict was caused by greed, slavery, cruelty, propaganda, racial comments, and enhanced with weapons. Nowadays things like politics, greed, guns, racial comments, and significant changes in power causes conflict.

           All the best,

                      HC9

Summary hc10, Sutton Public School, Canada

Greetings Everyone, I am sorry that we are a bit late with our responses. I have asked each student to create their own summary for posting here. I will post three of the ones that I have so far and post more in the coming days. The first three are from the perspective of our grade six students (age 11/12)...

GTP Answer Summary

In this set of answers, I have gathered that neighbouring countries, inequalities, pollution, and political things are threats toward humanity. Not all people said this, because hc5 from the Netherlands said that they did not have any problems. They said, “We personally don’t feel any threats to our political, environment and social stability.” While another school from the same country gave us a list of threats.

But anyways, most countries say that political issues are a big threat towards immigrants and people from other religions, as well as people with different racial characteristics. But racial problems are basically social, so I’ll talk about that in the social problems section. Anyways, bad presidents, senators, councillors, and even civilians can create political problems. Political issues are dangerous because it can cause anarchy, riots, and most dangerously, wars. Yes, the thing that everyone fears, wars. Political issues are the top reason for war. World War 1 was caused because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, sparking conflict between Yugoslavia and Austria. Then, with people rapidly joining sides, World War 1 was born.

The second most problematic is the environment, such as pollution, oil spills, and air pollution (Hair spray, smoke, cigarettes, and aerosols). Pollution is killing animals and birds, and killing people as well (Mostly gases kill people). If you aren’t following me, try this:

When you kill an animal, but you don’t do it on purpose, it is the equivalent of manslaughter. That’s why it’s so bad. People are killing animals, and at the rate we are doing it, pretty soon, animals will become extinct, water will be unfit to drink, and there will be no safe ground to plant trees because of soil pollution. Think of eating old tires and toxic material. Yechh! And if that’s not bad, then listen to this. If there are no more trees, we will run out of oxygen really fast! And asphyxiation is one of the worst ways to die, so we sure don’t want that to happen!

Third are social problems. If you haven’t heard of it, Justin Trudeau, the leader of the opposition, said that Quebecers are better than the rest of Canadians [Quebec is the second largest province with populated largely with francophones]. You might have also heard that some people don’t like President Barack Obama, just because he’s black. These are both social problems. Some causes of social problems are racism, sexism, or just being plain mean. Yes, it could be Adolf Hitler saying that he doesn’t like Jews and plans to exterminate them or just that kid down the road that is always mean to you, social problems do cause big problems.

Fourth is neighbouring countries. Only one class said this, (hc1) so this part is for them. I do agree with them about the U.S, and I couldn’t have said their answer better myself. I do believe that we have to bail the U.S. out of their problems, being international peacekeepers. I do agree with them, that our bond is strong, and I do worry about our future relationship. If things go bad, this will be a big problem, given that they are a bigger country and that they have a bigger military force than us, and some strong allies. So I think it is safe to say that U.S. and other neighbouring countries are threats to countries that are nearby them, given their military force, attitude, political system, or just bullying tendencies.

So, in conclusion, Political issues, Social problems, Environmental problems, and neighbouring countries are all threats to humanity.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

All of the answers were really cool because we got to learn threats that effect different countries; this is what I thought of them.

Hc1 Canada is saying that the USA is threatening Canada’s stability because if we don’t do what they say or do what they want they might say that they won’t trade with us or they might want to have a war. What Hc1 is saying is that the USA is the big kid on the playground and Canada is the big kid’s “friend” and the USA will be a bad friend if we don’t do what they say.

Hc3 Netherlands is saying that the quality of their country is going down because some people don’t take care of the planet.

Hc5 Netherlands is saying that they don’t have any threats but hc3 Netherlands says that the quality of their soil, water, and air is low and hc7 Netherlands says that Geert Wilders is a problem and they are all from the same country! So I don’t know who to believe.

Hc3 Netherlands, Hc6 Ukraine, Hc8 Romania, and Hc9 Romania are all saying that people need to look after the planet. Hc3 Netherlands, said that the Netherlands’ stuff is really bad’ so one day our country might be like that soon if we don’t take care of the earth.

Because four schools said that we need to take care of our earth I think that we should, and four out seven schools are probably right.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I will compare and contrast different answers.I will explain my opinion of each answer.

Hc 3 Netherlands said that they have a lot of problems with their political, environmental, and social stability.

Hc 5 Netherlands said that they have no problems with their political, environmental, and social stability.

Hc 7 Netherlands said that there biggest threat is the social threat of Geert Wilders who will be president of the Netherlands because he is against multicultural society.

Hc 3 Netherlands and Hc 7 Netherlands both clearly did a lot of research by having tones of proof and that they can prove their statements. Their answers are well written and have good statements. They both have correct answers and both are legit.

Hc 1 Canada said their biggest threat is the USA because they are like the big kid on the playground and were the big kids friend, and if we don’t listen to them the wont be a very good friend and could stop trading with us or start a war.

Hc 8 Romania said that the air pollution represents a big impact for everyone and we can actually feel this. I can feel this by myself because I`m breathing dirty or  contaminated air. They have their proof by personal experience.

Hc 9 Romania is also concerned about pollution and human ignorance towards pollution. They had lots of proof and showed that they really wanted to try to change things.

Hc 1 Canada, Hc 8 Romania, and Hc 9 Romania have a lot of proof and background knowledge in their answers. They are clear and to the point.

Overall the answers were good, enjoyable to read and I loved learning new things about different countries.

And now from some of our grade 7 students:

G.T.P. Essay

Throughout the last few months we have been participating in the G.T.P. each school participating asked a question and received an answer from each of the other participating schools. This is what I understood based on the answers we got from the other schools.

Hc1 (Angus Morrison, Canada) felt that the U.S. is the most significant threat to Canada, because we often have to bail them out of their problems. I agree with that, but I also think that the U.S. is not only a threat to Canada but to the U.S. themselves. Hc1 also said that they feel the U.S. is the biggest threat because they take other countries resources and they fear that Canada could be next, because we have the largest fresh water supply in the world, I feel that this is a good reason. I don’t really think Canada has any other threats other than from us as a country.

There were four Netherlands schools participating in the G.T.P. (Hc3, Hc4, Hc5 and Hc7) Hc3 came up with a very well thought out answer, with significant threats to their country. Hc4 didn’t answer, and Hc5 said that they had no problems. Their picture did not seem to be connected to their answer in any way. We checked out some of the answers to the other schools as well, and there were not many problems. Their pictures also seemed disconnected to the answers. I wish that they could have told me more about the problems. Hc7, the last school from the Netherlands says Geert Wilders is their biggest threat because he is against multicultural society. Overall, the majority of the Netherlands schools that posted an answer had good answers.

Hc6 feels that the government doesn’t help the other society members as much as they should, that they only think of themselves. They also mentioned gas being a problem in the Ukraine, as well as pollution having an effect on not only their country but the entire world. Hc8 and Hc9 were the two schools from Romania. Hc8 mentioned that a social stability and political threat is inequality between humans.

Over all, I think we received good answers from the majority of the other school participating. The majority of us found definite threats or potential threats to our society.

Alex
The Global teenager project has been a great success. We have been asked to create an essay summarising all the answers the other schools have given us to our question. We now know much more about the environmental and social stability in other countries. This has been such a “great” learning opportunity.
One of the biggest problems was the environment. As expressed in the question.Hc3, The Netherlands had an especially interesting case. They expressed how poor their air and water qualities were compared to everyone else. They had the most polluted surface in Europe. The also said the chances of getting out of this environmental hole were low seeing as their government had made some financial cuts to their water budget. They also expressed their “concerns” for the health of the population.
On a similar matter Hc5 (also from the Netherlands) felt that there weren’t really ANY problems with their political, environmental and social stability. I find this very interesting that two schools from the same country have completely different opinions.

Hc7 also from the Netherlands decided that the issue with their country wasn’t so much their environment as there government itself, specifically the new president Geert Wilders. They believe that with him in power “the immigrants will cause trouble” and cause everybody to go on strike.

This has been my summary on the answers to our question from the Netherlands, describing the issues with there political, social and environmental stability.

We are very sorry to read that the school from Lebanon has dropped at the end; we see on the news every day how hard the situation in Lebanon is.
Over one million refuges from in Lebanon influences life with big impact and makes the theme of this circle very realistic. We hope and pray that peace will come soon.
Thanks to Lorentz (hc3) and COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU (hc9, ) for already posting their Summaries; we have bee informed that other classes are still working hard on their answers..
Many greetings, Bob
