hc4, Tabor Scholengemeenschap / locatie Werenfridus, Netherlands, Question:

There`s, according to us, quite a strange development going on at the moment.
On the one hand are people talking about globalisation and about a world that seems to be getting “smaller” all the time.

The result is that people are communicating and trading more and more but also interfering in eachother`s lifes, communities and societies.

This also brings us another change because;
On the other hand we experience that alot of people in our country but also in countries around us seem to be afraid of a globalised world and they start to move back to regional and even smaller communities. This causes problems and even hatred for other peoples/religions/cultures inside or outside our own country.

We do not understand this. Globalisation opposite regionalisation!! Can anyone explain this to us?

Answer from hc1

We know that some people are afraid of globalization. We think people aren’t just afraid of globalization, but are afraid of losing their culture, tradition, and/or religion. The world is becoming “smaller” because developed countries can find out what’s happing in other countries all around as a result of the internet. People can find out by media too. The media has news coming from every country. For example, when Haiti had a big earthquake in 2010 people were filming victims In Haiti, interviewing them and had a chance to help people there. The media is a type of globalization. Globalization is improving because there were no newspapers or news channels 100 years ago. Now, because developed countries are globalized, we do have more knowledge of conflict around the world. We feel that a globalized world should be feared because of people wanting more causing conflict between developed and developing countries. We also feel that it shouldn’t be feared because this causes people to have knowledge which they can help out with solving world issues.

Question = Explanation of globalization opposite regionalization

Globalization =

The worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration. Globalization implies the opening of local and nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook of an interconnected and interdependent world with free transfer of capital, goods, and services across national frontiers. However, it does not include unhindered movement of labor and, as suggested by some economists, may hurt smaller or fragile economies if applied indiscriminately.

Regionalization =

The process of dividing an area into smaller segments called regions. One of the more obvious examples of regionalization is the division of a nation into states or provinces. Businesses also use regionalization as a management tool and a way to make certain that needs unique to particular areas are met.

The difference between globalization and regionalization is that globalization is worldwide. Regionalization is dividing an area into a smaller segment, called regions. Without regionalization you can’t have globalization. Because regionalization also has to do things with business and economics.

I hope you understand this information, and that we could help you out J

Answer from hc5

Every country wants to be wealthy and in the top of the world economy. They want a say in the world business and be trusted by other countries, because most countries only want to trade with countries with a good economy and a good reputation.

Globalization is mostly in transport and economy.   Countries don’t want to be recognized, with other countries which have a totally other meaning about sexuality and rather stay with its own meaning and ways of living. Countries really want to globalize but also want  to be their own country with their own meaning.

Answer from hc6

Globalization refers to the increasing integration of production, development and communication among nations on a worldwide scale. Globalization is often divided into three categories: economic, political and social. Though all three are interdependent, economic and political forces are usually the driving factors of globalization, while social changes generally occur as a result of those activities. Social globalization pertains to human interaction within cultural communities, encompassing topics like family, religion, work and education.

Globalization promotes the integration of societies and economies across state borders all around the world. Regionalization supports precisely the opposite: economic and social discourse limited to geographical regions, such as Europe or North America. To an extent, both processes are becoming a reality. The success of the European Union is a form of regionalization, but the EU and its member states also operate prominently as actors on the global stage.

Globalization of the world economy or economic globalization has been especially pronounced after World War II and the Great Depression of the 1930’s in the USA. Technically, globalization on the economic front refers to the integration of product prices, labour wages, interest rates and rates of profit toward developed country standards. The rise in the volume of trade between the developed and the developing countries, increase in cross-border transactions, rise in immigration and transfer of technology are some of the key issues of globalization.

Answer from hc7

We think regionalization is better than globalization. If we have globalization over the world, and we are all one, it could go wrong.

Of course now you are asking why…

1, If the economics falls down, it will have effect on the whole world. If we are globalized , all the economics will be over the country. There wouldn’t been different money or prices.  Poverty wouldn’t exist in certain            countries or poverty would be all over the world. That means that globalization can be well , but it can go wrong too.

2, If there is more globalization more cultures are mixed up. It’s not a bad thing if that happens, because how further we go in time how more cultures are mixed, but some people are scared for mixing up cultures.          They hear all stories over each other and that’s how discriminating starts.

But of course we have some globalization too.

For example ;  We have good connections with other countries.  Some countries produce products that we use and we can easily contact them and sell and buy products that we use.

Regionalization is more common because it gives people a safer feeling.  They are less conflicts . People have their own cultures. That is more appreciated because humans are scared for changes.

So how does this opposite each other?

Conclusion:

-          Globalization is over the world and effects everybody . All cultures are mixed . Globalization is a part of our community because we use it to share ideas and products with each other. Without each other we can’t have certain foodstuff and clothes etc…

-          Regionalization is the opposite because it isn’t about the whole world but it is about small regions . That is better for us because of economic aspects. Our community feels safer because we are in smaller groups. That way we can have our own cultures and social contacts.

Answer from hc8

Globalisation and regionalisation are two key defining features of the contemporary world politics. Regionalisation and globalisation are not completely new processes. Nonetheless it can be said there was a (re)emergence of both processes in relevance, influence and intensity since the 1980s and especially during the 1990s after the end of the Cold War.

In globalization discourse, it represents a world that becomes less interconnected, with a stronger regional focus.

Globalisation promotes the integration of societies and economies across state borders all around the world. Regionalisation supports precisely the opposite: economic and social discourse limited to geographical regions, such as Europe or North America. To an extent, both processes are becoming a reality. The success of the European Union is a form of regionalisation, but the EU and its member states also operate prominently as actors on the global stage.

Increasing globalization of the world economy are fundamental feature of the XXI century.
Globalization is the process of widening, deepening and acceleration of the interconnections on a global scale in all aspects of contemporary socioeconomic. So not only in the economic field, as has long been perceived, but also in the social, political, technological and cultural ones.
The main aspects of social and economic life that reflects the globalization process are:
Global nature of science and technology
        Global marketing
        Global Financial System
       Degree communications infrastructure

The regionalization phenomenon means the tendency to see states belonging to the same geographical regions closer economically and / or politically. Regional grouping of several states led to the formation of so-called regional blocs, suggesting the idea of cohesion, unity and solidarity.

There are several types of unions / regional blocks from the simple free trade area to the most integrated and complex economic union.

In free trade areas are: NAFTA, ASEAN, APEC, EFTA, CEFTA and the only regional grouping of economic union is the European Union.

Some people like globalization because some businesses, for example, could benefit, while others may not. Same thing for regionalization.

Globalization is when people expand social and business relations across Earth while regionalization is when these relations are restricted to a certain region. One example of where globalization and regionalization conflict is the milk industry in Canada. In the United States, you are allowed to use certain artificial growth hormones (rBST) that you are not allowed to use in Canada. This hormone causes cattle to produce more milk than they would naturally. The increased milk supply causes the price to be less, making US milk cheaper than Canadian milk.

In this case, some Canadian consumers want globalization because they want cheaper milk. The Canadian dairy farmers want to keep the industry in Canada so that no trade deficits are created by imports.

Globalization is good in some scenarios but not in others, and the same applies to regionalization.
