hc9, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania, teacher SANDU DOINA, ILIE CATALINA, Question:

Conflicts have been present in human history from very long ago up to the present. However, they have changed in time, that is, we think their causes are different.

What do you think caused more conflicts in the past and what is causing them nowadays? What can we do besides respecting human rights in order to avoid conflicts today?

Answer from hc1

We think that the main reason causing conflicts in the past and present is religion. In order to avoid conflicts today, besides respecting human rights, we could enforce a law to ensure that religion isn’t a good excuse or the way to solve or change our problems.

A good example of a conflict that was started by religion would have to be the Crusades because their primary aim was to liberate and preserve the holy land, in particular the holy Christian places in Jerusalem, from Muslim control.

We feel that religion is often used as an excuse. What would happen if we eliminated that? Life would be completely different, no one would be able to say “oh, yah, I killed him cause, its part of my religion.” They wouldn’t be able to judge, and most importantly, they wouldn’t be able to use their religion to mask the fact that what they are doing is wrong.

Question HC9:

What do you think caused more conflicts in the past and what is causing them nowadays? What can we do besides respecting human rights in order to avoid conflicts today?

Answer to HC9:

We need to communicate better with each other to avoid conflicts and explain each other what the problem is, then everyone can think about it and get it fixed. In the past they did not know why there were more than confliction now because they didn’t talk. Talking helps a lot.

There are many conflicts around the world and they are not solved but because no one really thinks about it. Everyone can do something about it when we talk to each other and to think of a solution .

Every human being has rights, that is important. people do not think about that and the conflict get worse. people should respect each other and there you can also take resolve conflicts.

We think in history many conflicts were caused by people who wanted to have leverage and wealth. Some people want it all, some people just didn’t have anything, they had to work a lot for their food, but they didn’t earn much. Also the differences between the religions was very important.
Now it’s different,  because in our country, everybody can have his or her own religion. But sometimes arguments can arise between immigrants in our country and the dutch people. You can think of Geert Wilders. He doesn’t want the Islamic people to wear burqa’s and headscarves. But we don’t have war in the Netherlands.

We are convinced that religion is the cause of conflicts in the world in the past and in the present.

Religion and conflict is a controversial issue. In local as well as national contexts, religion can be seen as both the cause of conflicts and an important tool for conflict resolution. This double role has become even more pertinent after. A multidimensional approach to religion becomes necessary in order to understand the role of religion as a major force for integration or marginalisation.

First, what are conflicts?

A conflict is a situation in which two or more people opposing views or wishes. So you have at least a disagreement.

Conflicts in groups nowadays.

Conflicts of problems in a group are inevitable, so many people, so many opinions. People have individual belongings above the groups. Each group is constantly make decisions to solve problems.

The Conflicts in groups in the past.

The caused in the past is almost the same as nowadays. The conflicts are about money, power, land, rights and laws, religions and immigration.

Avoiding conflicts.

You can choose to avoid conflicts, when the issue isn’t important and the relationship is important.  You don’t react and step away from it.

You can choose to fight, when the issue and the relationship is not important. You will give everything to win.

You can also work together. Working together is when the issue and the relation is very important.

In my opinion, I think that in the past the laws weren’t very punishing with the ones that didn’t respect them. As an example if we go back to the 19 th century, the people living in the countryside usually had problems with their land. Either because of the thieves which were stealling everything grown on the land or because of the neighbours which were always in a bad mood.

Nowadays, the conflicts aren’t for land and things like that but for money, houses and especially jewellery. The modern thieves steal from anybody, from children all the way up to old people. Honestly, in the world we live now, when something goes wrong, we can just hope that the law will be on our side and I say “hope” because here in Romania the law is very corrupt.

On the other hand, at the global level, the root causes of conflicts are very diverse. The conquest of new lands, demarcation of the borders of the state by the great powers who ignorant ethnic or religious aspects, formed the basis of numerous conflicts.

At present, the root causes of conflicts are related to the desire for independence of populations (for example, in the Middle East), of religious and ethnic discrimination, of the interests of the geo-political, geo-strategic or economic interests of the great powers in certain areas.

For example, in the case of oil resources because it is facing resistance from the States that they hold, the great powers invoked for various reasons (in support of terrorism, possession of arms of mass destruction, chemical, nuclear) to justify the military intervention and to impose its own solutions.

Therefore, we consider that in order to prevent this type of conflict, the international community must take specific intervention methods, e.g. policies, programs, procedures, diplomatic initiatives, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian action ...

Well, nowadays things like politics, greed, guns, racial comments, and significant changes in power causes conflict.

In the past conflict was caused by greed, slavery, cruelty, propaganda, racial comments, and enhanced with weapons.

Hello,

in our opinion, war in the past occurred when there was a difference in religion in two nations, they both think they are the best, they are both willing to be better and then they start to fight.

Now wars occur because countries want more power or countries want to have payback because other countries attacked them, for example America is fighting because they were attacked on 11th of november 2001.

If nations talk more with each other they will understand each other better and maybe there will come less war.
